About Us

Mission

Granville County Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with God and people everywhere, from all walks of life, to develop communities with people in need by building and renovating houses.

History

The idea behind GCHFH started in 1989 by Sharon Colgrove. The first house was built in 1992. A total of eight Habitat homes have been built in Granville County, two of which were called "Interfaith Builds". The 9th home is to be built in 2010.  Via tithing, GCHFH have funded the construction of 11 homes in the Dominican Republic, making the total number of homes that GCHFH has built come to 19.

Our first homeowner paid off their mortgage in 2009. GCHFH had a "Mortgage Burning" to celebrate with the homeowner and her family.  The ReStore opened on June 1, 2007. Since then, we have diverted over $200,000 of merchandise from regional landfills.

How Habitat Works

Granville County HFH is a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing organization. Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with people in need to build and renovate decent, affordable housing. The houses then are sold to those in need at no profit and with no interest charged.

Volunteers provide most of the labor, and individual and corporate donors provide money and materials to build Habitat houses. Partner families invest a collective total of a hundred and fifty hours of labor - "sweat equity" - into building their homes.  The families also recruit "friends, neighbors, co-workers" to invest a collective total of 200 hours of "sweat equity".  The mortgage payments go into a revolving Fund for Humanity that is used to build more houses.
